Sanctions on oil supplies and other essentials have brought the island to its knees, and now Trump demands that Mexico join his embargo. Through co-option and other means, Trump intends to bring about sweeping changes in America’s “neighborhood” — a revolution that he jump-started last year by renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. He’s put the southern portion of the Western Hemisphere on notice that a new “sheriff” was in town and that each nation must fall in line or face serious consequences. Venezuela and Cuba are his first targets in this rollout of a “Donroe Doctrine” which will involve changes from Greenland to Argentina. But the first and greatest upheaval will be in Latin America. His first salvo was to close the U.S.-Mexico border, then deport hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants who are mostly Hispanic. Now he launches a series of interventions that will affect dozens of countries in South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
