NATO meets on July 11 and 12 and will decide whether to give Ukraine a clear commitment to membership in future. To refuse to do so is unconscionable, given Ukraine’s sacrifices. It will also prolong the war.
Below is a powerful and scathing meme posted by a Ukrainian after Russia’s 2022 invasion. The photo shows Hollywood director Mel Gibson, on the sidelines while filming his 2004 movie The Passion of Christ, while he explains the script to the actor portraying Jesus during the Crucifixion. This is the Ukrainian’s caption:
NATO must pledge membership to Ukraine this week, and must provide a no-fly zone and airforce. Now.
(I’m taking a rest and my next full newsletter will appear July 24.)

It must..but it won’t..Turkey was a terrible mistake for NATO..for that matter the entry of many former eastern bloc countries changed Nato from the image many of us of a certain age have- a tank and air barrier to soviet attack ..it’s now a half political camel of an entity that’s fine for maneuvers and statistics and saves the US money and materiel/people..but rather useless when put to the test because there are too many separate agenda at play
Have a good well deserved holiday Diane. I agree with you completely. End this war now and NATO can do it. Or does the military industrial complex like to drag it on for its own profit making purposes? One has to wonder why this is dragging on when there is a solution.
