And now we rush headlong into a realm of science fiction far, far beyond Frankenstein's monster. Actually, the monster appears to be us, as it is clearly our human imagination that sparks and incubates these modern engines of war, which will perhaps be our undoing. Or then again, the unanticipated consequences which attend all innovation might result in scenarios where, due to massive destruction, our leaders are finally forced to convene and devise ways for us to survive the Armageddon we have releases. I sometimes imagine a day in which our very imaginations, which, as tools, are not subject to morality and not capable of making moral decisions become irrevocably tethered to a moral sense based in the cardinal virtues. It might be that we'll ultimately have to frighten ourselves down that path, more's the pity.

It is interesting to contemplate our AI predicament from an evolutionary standpoint. All species that have evolved on our planet have advantages and disadvantages that allow them to compete in a limiting environment. Survival of the fittest culls the less fit in a specific environment, but this usually takes time (centuries, eons). Every species has within it a weakness that would have it fail in specific environments. However, we Homo Sapiens have short-circuited this by developing a very adaptable intelligence which has allowed us to populate and dominate virtually every environment on the planet. So what is our evolutionary sword of Damocles? Why, our very own intelligence!
