When it comes to the AI data centers and the immense power necessary to feed them, I become a worried. I read it eveywhere. Why such a gigantic deployment of resources toward something that remains a bit abstract to the layman that I am? Or is it that this will completely change the life on this planet which it appears it will be. It is clear to me that AI is the single biggest technological breakthrough ever that will make humans largely expandable and every superpower wishes to control it. Scary... but I am afraid that this trend is unstoppable and every tech giant is already happy to say their technology already uses AI. We need another Hollywood production such as 2001 Space Odyssey and 1984 to make people realize where we are headed or will be living in Aldous Huxley's world because of AI? .. Have a good day all Thank you once more Diane...
All big tech developments in the past produced unforeseen consequences. The Cowboys ride first and monitor the trail later. Its the adventure of the New Frontier. Didn't the Cossacks do the same thing a 1000 years ago in Eurasia? Being a bystander complaining about the dust, will not stop the herd. So buckle up for the ride. Does Canada have any horses left in the race?
Thank you. An issue that is overlooked and is terribly troubling, at least to me, is that AI allows those with little knowledge to instantly access limitless knowledge. It may create a civilization where anybody without any expertise view themselves as experts… I view AI as an important tool but unfettered access to its power contains the seeds of “our” societies destruction.
Like Mr. David, I remain exceedingly skeptical. Returns on investment for AI are dodgy, critical elements in the supply chains for computer components are in the hands outside our 'friends and family' networks, the grids here are already spluttering from this and other 'modernist' increasing loads, and remains vulnerable to aged-out transmission equipment, and base-load energy doesn't come on line overnight - even basic natural gas / diesel peaker generators take years to bring on-line, permitting and interconnection issues notwithstanding. This whole 'excitement for the next big thing', and 'getting ahead of China' has all the hallmarks of the next 'surefire Canadian Railways investments' scam of the last century, given the demonstrated ethos of its biggest salesmen presently on display.
And, in the end, we, who are to be effected, confused and outright displaced by this next big thing might ask ourselves, "Then what are people for, exactly?".
I am nearly certain I am a Luddite, or perhaps at best a dinosaur! I see, or imagine that I do, to utilize the Brad Pitt allegorized vehicle: “Killing Them Softly,” a coterie of kleptocratic, hyper-competitive, male adolescents arguing among themselves that they want to be well-paid, but that getting richer will lift all boats!
Whatever happened to on-shoring industries that reward Middle Class Trump voters? I’m good with investing in natural gas, oil, uranium, gold, copper and the like while our penchant for nationalizing financial repression makes their future purchasing power crap!
As usual Dianne, your article provokes serious thinking on the readers and opens their minds.
I wonder the creation of StarGate AI is not a reaction to the success of DeepSeek AI recently.
DeepSeek was created by one Chinese individual. It is backed by China government and others. It is an open source AI meaning it is free (almost free) to be used to any one in the world. DeepSeek uses a fraction of computer power and memory compared to OpenAI, the leading AI software in the US.
With all that, DeepSeek had beaten OpenAI in many test benchmarks.
StarGateAI is the behemoth closed source software relying on brute force approach to solve AI edges problems.
Sometimes you just cannot throw money at something and expect the results. Otherwise you would have found cures for cancers.
What I see here is the competition of two philosophies, one is democratic and open China borne DeepSeek AI versus capitalistic and closed StarGateAI of the US.
One thing I know, every developer out there wants and can get DeepSeek to further develop AI applications. I cannot say the same for StarGateAI or OpenAI.
I sense that you were offended by the term “democratic” to the Chinese AI DeepSeek.
If you look at the definition of democratic by Webster, it means available to the masses of people. Since DeepSeek is an open source, it is available to anyone who wants it. Therefore it is democratic, regardless where it is from.
It's just that China has a habit of trying to infiltrate/meddle with democratic societies. Open source AI would make it very popular. Not a programmer but is it possible to imbed nasties in their AI software? China has been playing the long game vis a vis destabilizing others. That should be at the front of everyone's mind.
AI brute is not where this is going. Remember distributed data processing? A supercomputer being replaced by servers about 1994. Each server dedicated to one area of expertise and able to talk with one another.
Future servers will run at incredible MIPs and will use little electricity because we will have conquered electrons to travel on a bus line (the biggest breakthrough), one after the other (not bashing into one another).
Have a sore left side? AI will tell you why and how to fix it. Complex contracts – legal ready in five minutes. The next pandemic solved when only a few contract it. Transportation alternatives analyzed instantly. Total analysis of enemy personnel and weakness. New materials and their alternatives better established.
The biggest hurdle is having enough clean electricity available to get this all started. And whatever the source it has to be 24/7.
Thanks again Diane for this coverage. I can understand the importance of AI as a military necessity. The thing I don't understand is why the money boys allow DT to place fools in charge of his nation's security? Is that good for business in the long run and particularly at this point in time? I thought having money suggested that those with it, are smarter than most everyone.

“sullen socialists clinging to unsustainable welfare states”. That’s a keeper.
. . . . it feels like they are re-inventing a 'brain' - only this brain costs big$$$ & the controls for it are . . . . not sure. ....

I guess the future’s for us kleptocrats!

Since when can you term anything from China as democratic.

No more comments mentioning “ those awful tweets??
