Too many peaceniks in the White House like Obama, John Kerry, and now Joe Biden. Trump was simply a minion of Putin. Where are John McCain, Ronald Reagan, and Margaret Thatcher when you need them? Stand up to a menace like Putin and he will back down. Turning around those warships from entering the Black Sea looked very weak. A thug like Putin just eats that up.
Sadly, Reagan and Thatcher were duped by Gorbachev, aided and abetted by Alexander Yakovlev, the "Architect of Glasnost" who was also CPSU Central Committee Head of Agitation and Propaganda.
American has no foreign policy worth spit. Its either shaking a fist or sanctions. Where are the career diplomats and political scientists who are suppose to be knowledgeable of their areas of responsibility withrespect to politics, culture, religion, and
history both internal and external. Then advise. Politicians dance to different drum...look good, sound forceful and keep the media crictics somewhat happy. Putin plays and understands the game. America, Britian,France have forgot. Corporate self interests and money taint policy.
I just hope that we are not seeing a reenactment of Neville Chamberlain with the Germans!
from a piece
Chamberlain and Hitler 1938.
In September 1938 he turned his attention to the three million Germans living in part of Czechoslovakia called the Sudetenland. Sudeten Germans began protests and provoked violence from the Czech police. Hitler claimed that 300 Sudeten Germans had been killed. This was not actually the case, but Hitler used it as an excuse to place German troops along the Czech border.
The broad conclusions of this Note may be summarized as follows :-
(a) A German absorption of Czechoslovakia will enhance her military prestige, increase her war potential and probably enable her to dispose of stronger land forces against France and ourselves than she can do at present.
(b) So far as air power is concerned, Germany may be able to maintain her lead over the Franco-British Air Forces in air striking power. On the other hand, it is open to us, provided that we make the necessary effort, to catch her up, or at least greatly reduce her lead, in the matter of defence (both active and passive) against air attack. By so doing we shall have heavily insured ourselves against the greatest danger to which we are present exposed: indeed by substantially reducing Germany’s only chance of a rapid decision, we shall have provided a strong deterrent against her making the attempt.
Sounds like a repeat to me , just different actors and a different stage !
It is hard to believe that Yale confers degrees in international relations without requiring that graduates speak a foreign language-- Jake Sullivan apparently does not inasmuch as no foreign language ability is noted in any bio. Failure to speak a foreign language and dabbling in the international arena is like walking into a boxing ring with no arms.
Good article but the Soviet Union didn't disintegrate. It rebranded, streamlined and diversified. The West didn't win the Cold War, anymore than Napoleon beat the Russians when he took Moscow, or Hitler when his troops reached the Volga.
Putin treated Trump as an equal , thinking him a bit scary not sure what he would do! Trump more likely to fire shots across the bows of a Russian ship!. Putin treats Biden like a 4 year old who wants to play with his plastic battleships in the bath tub !
As VDH once wrote, "Trump was unpredictably blunt, Biden is predictably confusing." Malcolm has a point. In dealing with the likes of Putin, like in chess, unpredictability is a plus. Predictability, a sure loser.

"The pipeline must be built" . . . even if it means suicide for Germany and the end of a united EU. Is that what you're wishing for?
Spoken like a well-paid Kremlin troll.
