You are probably correct, Diane, in recognizing that Trump would almost certainly lose to a Biden/Newsome ticket because everybody will understand that they are voting for the president-in-waiting. Perhaps Biden's only reason for another four years as president would be to cement his legacy as a successful president, and seek the earliest opportunity - or slippage - to pass the baton.

If a Biden/Newsome ticket is the only way to ensure a Trump defeat, then this dyed-in-the-wool conservative Republican will vote Democrat. But if Trump is the Republican contender, then ANY Democrat ticket is likely to get my vote.

However, Diane, although you emphasize Newsome's popularity, his polished style, and his experience as governor, you leave out his performance in that position. California has huge problems, not leastr of it is a seccession movement

I have always thought that Biden is only running because the Dems have failed to cultivate any suitable alternatives. Newsom is a great pick for running mate in the absence of a great main altarnative, and I do hope Mr. Biden goes for the right decision: the future of the country and not personal feelings. Harris has been pretty much MIA since January 2021 and is clearly not the right person for this job.

(Darn.....the comment section is so sensitive that it almost decides on its own when to "let loose.)

........not least of which is its secession movement in the more conservative north. Obviously, there are quite a few California residents who are not enamored with Newsome and his policies.

Personally, I still believe that one of the Republican contenders - though none carrying Trump's stamp of approval - may beat Trump in the primaries if the others have the good sense to step aside and gather behind the last sensible man or woman standing......which at this time would appear to be Nikki Haley.

Yes ! What a great plan. Perfect all around . The voters will be happy because they will feel a young vibrant man will have Biden’s back ! He will have enormous voter appeal - good looking and presidential looking ! I felt great relief reading this post because Donny won’t be happy at all , and that can only be a good thing .

As a non-American, I can only say that this analysis by Diane is uplifting. The quagmire of politics that currently faces the electorate of USA needs a solution quick. The wolves are at the door & my fear is that tRUMP will welcome the chaos to cover his poor leadership and/or understanding of democracy AND decency.

Jim Clyburn. Black voters of South Carolina. Without them Biden would not have been the nominee. Blacks form the base of the Democratic party.. Not only would DEMS say goodbye to millions of their base who would stay home in 2024, they would basically destroy their party for the foreseeable future. Swapping in Newsome for Kamala is not an option.

Swap out Biden for Sen Mark Warner of VA, but that won't happen either. Biden/Harris is the ticket.

This would be an interesting development nationally but in California, voters have declared him a disaster zone. He took the state from a huge surplus budget to a big deficit. Last weeks show that half of the residents disapprove of him. He might finally win the states voters over if only because his federal ascendancy will rid the state of crime, bankruptcy, and torpor. https://www.mercurynews.com/2023/05/12/how-newsom-solves-california-budget-that-went-from-a-97-5-billion-surplus-to-31-5-billion-deficit/

Excellent as always I think Newsom would be a good choice as I think with him as the candidate he will attract voters that would vote democrat except not for Biden. I could not imagine there are many democrats that would not vote for Newsom. Maybe I am wrong.

Is there a “movement” organized to promote the idea? Are the three players already planning to do so?

It all makes too much sense....but will it happen?

Common sense a missing factor world wide.

I must stand up for Trump - he did a great job as President (maybe too loudly) but he got things done. The infrastructure bill was started under him, and it is the only thing Biden can claim as a victory.

I wish reporting could be more fact based. I don't like "feelings" reporting.
