India's continuing ties to Putin/Russia are a concern. The country seems to be playing all sides and this isn't the time for that, in my opinion. India needs to pick a side.
Filthy air and public drinking water and very dense population compared to some “Western” countries. I wonder what their emigration rate is now, especially to the US and Canada?
Gautam Adani, Asia’s richest man. “A country, crushed and drained by its colonial rulers, today stands on the cusp of an extraordinary growth
Well now Mr Adani join he Brit haters who blame all their problems before independence on their colonial history as do the indoctrinated people in the Republic of Ireland. Endlessly. So where did India get its English language from? Its democracy? Its huge railway infrastructure? And who divided India? Jinnah.
And which country buys oil/gas from tyrant Russia, a brutal colonial nation?
Excellent newsletter Diane. India certainly is impressive but sometimes I think that country is hopeless because of its caste system and their treatment of Dalits. And the incompatibility with the large Muslim minority.
Israel, mentioned here as a member of the Quad, did not sign onto US sanctions on Russia, is providing no military equipment to Ukraine, and refused to allow Ukraine to be provided an Iron Dome by the US, which pays so much for its own Iron Dome and military support. Many of the Russian oligarchs have at least one Jewish grandparent so they can get citizenship there and avoid sanctions. Further, Israel does not tax any income from foreign sources for 10 years--a further boon. Like India, Israel does what it considers is in its own self interest.
India certainly shows that they are 'intellectually' very creative. However, I feel that an arial view of India would reveal, as with Russia, the urban areas are well served, but it's the rural areas that remain far, far behind - left in the dust if you will. The barbaric treatment of women (rapes, forced marriages) are also showing that India has a long way to go to be a country of progress. Also, the rate of birth increases which continues to require the land grab - at the detriment to their wildlife safety, concerns me as it does in China & other Asian & African countries.

I live in Canada and find many Indians are here. And Canada does not blame past problems on its past British history.

Israel is also playing realpolitik, going to be writing about that soon.
Good and perhaps immoral rather then realpolitik?
hard to argue with success. I hope that as they grow into their own they will turn to environmental and climate concerns as well as crime reduction.
