Neither Russia or Hungary are democratic countries, both violate every tenet of The EU, NATO and the UN. Both should be expelled, they make a mockery of all.

I agree, that any friend of Putin is not a friend of democracy. The EU must take evasive action. Makes you wonder why are Trump and the GOP supporters of Orban. Reminder, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, including money.

Perhaps Diane could do an article on why the EU agreed to this unanimity clause in the first place. What were they smoking in the 1970s?

And here he was last weekend in Washington meeting with Republican Congress members - again. This tells us all we need to know about what the GOP has planned.

Orban definitely needs to go.

Kick him out of the EU.

NATO 1needs to update their membership rules; no authoritarian dictatorships!

It's the North Atlantic Treaty

Organization for crying out

loud. Hungary/Orban is refusing all aid and membership to Ukraine.

It's becoming nearly as

ineffective as the UN.

Thanks Diane. So GOP Trump and Orban in bed. EU needs to revise its constitution so any country that flagrantly breaks its democratic rules can be expelled by a majority of members. As for the GOP it breaks all the best of American constitution

The parliament in Budapest is the most beautiful building among European parliaments, and down the street is the huge synagogue that the Nazis didn't destroy; so strange that this country brutalized by the Nazis and then by the Soviets has turned to Orban who has kept Hungary poor and his friends rich. Perhaps it's because Hungary was governed by the Sultan in Constantinople for centuries and really have no tradition of freedom or liberal democracy, or perhaps life's kaleidoscope just spat out Orban to oppress them further for another generation. But a country cannot be expelled from NATO or the EU; maybe it was a flaw in the design or maybe they thought it was the only way the system could be made to function. There are always workarounds and it seems now that German timidity is easing a bit and the Poles have Donald Tusk who is immensely experienced, things may shift in the right direction. The EU is not ineffective, on the contrary it is the most successful multi-language organization in history, 27 different languages and histories, combined economies second only the United States. Bearing in mind all Americans speak the same language and yet we often despair of the mess that is frequently Washington DC, the EU by comparison is not doing so bad.

A rollercoaster indeed... seems like there was a wee miscalculation on the part of the EU leadership, as this was quite a predictable outcome, the way things were done.
