I have to strongly disagree Diane that "it’s inexplicable that a President of the United States would not move heaven and earth to stop the slaughter and would, instead, remain friendly with the perpetrator".
We have long known that Trump is a pathologic, narcissistic coward, who sees himself as a 'strongman'-- along the lines of Putin and Xi -- rather than the TACO he continually proves himself to be. To assume he is anything less, is to ignore his personal, business and political past. What would be inexplicable would be for him to suddenly find a conscience and do the right thing. That, sadly, will never happen . . . he is totally hardwired against any such thing.
You are correct in that "Putin’s Patsy will be discredited in the annals of history." Once Trump is gone, and there is no need for his 'psychophants' to prop up his bloated ego, history will indeed be unkind to one of the worst political leaders of all time.
Totally ignored is Putin's rule of slaughter and elimination of opponents, pillage, spread of war, death and destruction in all hemispheres. Does he think he is Stalin?
Putin how are you and cronies enjoying the stolen wealth from the Russian motherland and citizens right now?
Bloomberg news carried a story this week in which a Russian, generally favorable to the West, said that it is unreasonable to assume that Putin would never use an atomic weapon if things really go downhill for Putin. It seems to me that that moment is close. Russia cannot supply Crimea as the Ukrainians are striking down any vehicles entering. Further their war of aggression is now costing them 35,000 casualties a month. Should we be afraid that Putin will use nuclear weapons???
100%! Putin is like a cornered animal that will fight for its life. He does not have the conscience to stop himself from using a nuclear bomb if he believes that is his last resort. Remember your parents warning . . . "don't back that skunk into a corner!"
Hopefully, the Russian generals have their pistols locked and loaded and ready to fire should Putin move his finger in the wrong direction,
I have no doubt Putin would use tactical nuclear weapons. Putins' misguided war in Ukraine, which I said in 2022 would lead to a protracted war of attrition, has emasulated Russia: a significant ego dump for the vile Putin. In his mind he has nothing to lose.
If Obama had any foreign policy balls in 2014, when Russia invaded Crimea, Putin in 2022 would not have been so embolded and Trump not so enamored.
Bring on the Crimean chapter as you describe it, Diane. War is truly dreadful, and you outline the stats only too well. But this war is not the fault of Ukraine and Putin, a true megalomaniac, has to be not only stopped, but taught a lesson.
I still blame Biden for not stepping in on this war - that NATO stood by & watched the slaughter of innocent people - hospitals, schools, children etc. Trump is Trump. - purely thinking he can bully his way thru any conflict or any country. He respects no one except dictators - hence - UKR has been at the mercy of USA that botched the start of the war & Nato AND Europe did nothing. If I saw a person being attacked by hoodlums, I wouldn't sit & watch - I'd do 'something' to interfere & stop it - so where is the rest of the world? I have lost faith in the USA & most of Europe. Germany has finally picked up the slack - but a bit late in the game. Thank GOD for Zelensky - he's the strength no other leaders in the world can come close to!!!!
President Trump is becoming increasingly ineffective and irrelevant. He fails to make the most basic value judgements and has been firewalled by Canada because he is quixotic in his behavior. The Iran deal is laughable as it grants the enemy of the Iranian people 300 plus billions to ratchet down their evil supression of the citizens. Americans are revealing a stunning lack of wisdom as well, probably because of excess hubris and lack of awareness of the real world. I have been pleasantly surprised by Mark Carneys good leadership instincts. Hopefully this is a turning point for Canada after 10 years of Trudeau vacuousness .

There is actually one other favorable development. Trump might be 2000 miles away but the arms of Drill Baby Drill are verrrrrrry long. https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/energy/crude-oil/light-sweet-crude.quotes.html
