And maximum power is his objective. “Russia” becomes a useful concept for him since it provides him with a loyalist's (or patriot's) rationale for his actions, but his motivation is totally personal. He is like an arch villain in a James Bond story, but lacking the comic oddities and psychopathic characteristics (at least for now).
This analysis supports the theories that he was using Trump as a tool to accomplish his goals, and he appears to have done so with some success. It certainly amplifies the concern for the unwitnessed talks between the two. It did seem on several occasions that Trump was acting on Putin’s behalf, and Putin responded with ‘attaboys.’
This lays out the world as a chessboard and Putin the only one realizing that it is real rather than a board game.
