Whatever. There’s enough geo-political mess to go around. The lynchpin still sits in Bush’s and Cheney’s hands in my opinion. Destabilized the entire region. It is now a powder keg just waiting for some damn fool to light the fuse and we can’t seem to be able to field any reliable intelligence now. Not a comforting thought at all.
Without a doubt. Hasn’t been since the UN created the state of Israel at least. It’s been my nightmare for years, and I do mean years, that this area would end up blowing us all us with themselves. Between Iran going gung ho with their nuclear capabilities, add all the war matériel left behind by us and the feckless Afghani “troops” plus our nuclear arsenal in Pakistan, Israel sending missiles into Lebanon/Gaza, pick a day; yeah, no. It’s never been stable. Civilization supposedly has its roots here so maybe the Fickle Finger of Fate has decreed that those roots have rotted beyond redemption?
Superb piece by Diane. Her prescription to control terrorism - "Obviously, the only way to fight terrorism is to erect barriers, early-warning systems, and pervasive surveillance networks," is on the money and needs to be taken seriously. And yet, the US and Europe seem to be doing exactly the opposite: open and porous borders, and little if any surveillance of networks, a policy that will come back to haunt the West.
"Meanwhile, a new government was set up in Kabul and the United States and NATO allies became mired in years of “nation-building” consisting of equipping and training police and military forces to secure the country, educating technocrats, creating institutions, building infrastructure, and opening hospitals and schools"
This was a good thing. Right?
The future is frightening... Will they spread havoc around the world?....will they ally with Iran, Syria or even China?........Will they target Israel and the Gulf states, in tandem with Turkey, Iran and Pakistan?........There are so many questions.
Saddam would have kept the mess under control!. Side note is that Russia and Turkey are maintaining their embassy's and are waiting to see what gives.
Obama owns Syria.......

Not sure that the region was a ever stable.

No more cash cow for the fat cat american military industrialists...
Most shameful that is the world's failure to make a concerted rescue mission of the women and children from the impending hell
Another bombing in Washington or New York is now inevitable maybe September 11th again, go to work late that day !
The evaluation of politics and diplomacy leading up to WWI has been less than flattering. How will these escapades be evaluated 50 years from now?
Trump 'to order further troop withdrawal' from Afghanistan and Iraq.https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-54968200

Great article. Glad Biden stopped the circus
Stopped it without proper rules of withdrawal and totally underestimating the consequences.
Making rules to abide by with the taliban is like inviting Hitler to a bar mitzvah! Seriously?
agree
We were in Afghanistan to stop the Taliban from overrunning Pakistan next door, who have nuclear weapons. Wake the fck up!
