So much conflict in and around Russia which hopefully will continue to rip apart Putin's hold on the country and some of its neighbours. He's using the UKR war to destroy generations of non ethnic Russian citizens including cleaning out his jails of dissidents. Let's hope new and friendly nations are formed to stop Putin and re-gain some kind of stability in some vital regions. As for those oligarchs and some with mercenary armies there's an old saying "Wherever there is power, greed and money, there is corruption.
Your research and observations are remarkable. Thanks for bringing this international perspective to us. I feel as if I am taking a course in world history. I suspect less than 5% of Americans have any realistic sense of this part of the world. You are enlightening us. Thanks for the geopolitical lessons! The complexity of Russia is mind blowing.
Thank you for another very informative article Diane. The history of Europe is a lesson in mans' inhumanity to man. It's becoming clear to me why so many people fled Europe to come to the " New World".
I too have relatives in UKR & my stress level has been haunting me since the start of the war. The devastation hits my gut each and every day from film footage - hope we have an ending soon - I could become an alcoholic if it continues much longer (yeah - I have to suppress my anxiety)
Wilfred Owen wrote probably the most famous poem about the futility of war: "Futility," published June 15, 1918. No one then knew the war would be finished in less than 5 months, on November 11, 1918. But Owens himself had been killed exactly a week earlier, on November 4 leading his men in a fierce battle. Futility!

Thank you Diane for another
informative and very interesting breakdown of this
area. Putin's under a lot of pressure, isn't he.
Very interesting thank you

“unjust genocide”? Please define a just genocide..
Two general questions:
1. Are your many friends and aquaintances in Ukraine ok?
2. Will/has Ukraine become Putin's "Vietnam"? (An lengthy futile war costing many lives)
No they are not ok and three have died
All wars are futile

I'm sorry to hear it.
