I interviewed Yuriy Vitrenko in Canada's Financial Post who called for a complete ban on oil and gas and for Canada and Norway to open the taps to replace Russian oil and gas and keep prices down here --- https://financialpost.com/diane-francis/diane-francis-putins-regime-will-lose-one-on-one-with-ukraine-gas-chief-yuriy-vitrenko

The International Energy Agency said 31 member-states will release 120m barrels of oil from emergency reserves to push down fuel prices, which surged after Russia invaded Ukraine. So what is Canada doing? It has the third largest oil reserves in the world but refuseds to pump more oil? Why? As a Canadian I am ashamed by the hypocrisy of the Canadian government. What do you think Diane as a fellow Canadian? Am I missing something?

Thank you for the clear and concise description of where the World stands. Obviously, many things must change to render the World a safer place. Makes you wonder why are these people / organizations being paid / sustained for this bureaucratic nightmare? What's the point? Any aggressor country should not be allowed Veto powers and a 70% majority would seem logical?

Ah so Canada did do something as in your article. Vitrenko said 'Ottawa stopped all oil imports from Russia and has just agreed to increase oil production by 200,000 barrels a day. But much more can be done and should be.' Why only 200,000 a day? Who decided on this figure I wonder?

Many thanks. Just wonder why Trudeau, Singh are moribund on this? I just sent email to the Conservative party to ask why the pussyfooting?

Any idea why Canada does not pump more oil? Global warming lobby in government? Is there any political opposition?

Excellent commentary Diane. The UN is so benign. Just like the League of Nations. And NATO needs to be changed too as you say. Why can’t individual NATO countries deliver more long range air defence missiles into Ukraine? Now I read that Canada refuses to deliver 24, of the 200 that we have in storage, Harpoon missiles to Ukraine. These missiles could eliminate some Russian ships in the Black Sea that have been launching cruise missiles into Ukraine. It’s like Canada thinks that sending the missiles would be too “harsh”. I’m embarrassed that Ukraine has to put up with this craven incompetence.

Scouting Motto : 'Be Prepared'. Are we? I hope that all the bright Military minds use this motto, for Scouting was created by Lord Baden Powell, decorated British Army Officer WW1. Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council. Established 29 May, 1997. A Nato Inst. Post Cold War Council. approx 50 Partners [30 Nato and surrounding countries] Purpose : To meet to discuss Political and Security Issues. If this action by Russia isn't the only issue being discussed at this table, then I don't know why. Time for some Nato members, with permission, send troops and equipment to Euro-Atlantic members whose countries share a border with Ukraine, and be at the ready close near the border. I recall hearing in January and February 2022, news that Russia was setting up camp with troops near the Ukraine Border. They did not announce their reason for doing so, and nor should the countries willing to send their Military to that region. Reports show Belarus now sending their troops into that South-Eastern part of the Ukraine. Moldova, a very small country, near to Crimea looks extremely vulnerable. Moldova is a member of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council, but a Nato Member.

Thanks Diane. The world becomes scarier by the hour. Even though both NATO and the UN are ultimately impotent what is the way out here? How can Russia be stopped? Bomb Moscow? That, I assume, would trigger a nuclear response. Pour European and American troops and weapons in to Ukraine to give it much needed support? We have already had threats from Putin in anticipation of that scenario. The risk, again, is nuclear warfare. It seems that we are in no better a position to stop a mad aggressor in his tracks now than when Hitler waged war and my father did his little bit to fight him off. The only practical solution seems to be a nice cup of tea for Putin liberally laced with Novichok but, as the old saying goes, "you can take a Putin to Novichok, but you can't make him drink"!

Obviously nothing hinders the members of NATO who want to provide arms to Ukraine. And if those countries can't figure out how to get them into Ukraine without having them on "official" NATO transport, that's pathetic. Maybe we should hire a bunch of smugglers from the Balkans.

We now know who the leader of the free world is and it isn't Biden. You have real courage Mr. Prime Minister Johnson.

Thanks Jim. I find Canada's weak response strange and can only conclude it is the work of the global warming lobby, to-day's mighty influencers based on much distorted information.

Diane, as always, you strike the Heart of the matter. One of your readers, Robbo points to 'The Global Warming Lobby' very astutely. Behind ALL these oil and gas shortages you will find the Elitist Environmentalist Propaganda that has been gaining ever more ground over the last 30 years among Western countries. While 'Doing the Right Thing' is laudable philosophically, we have destroyed western productivity and internal supply chains. In the midst of this war with Russia . . . our weakness is exposed, highlighted and crushing in it's reality. Behind the scenes, China this morning, voted to keep Russia on the 'Human Rights Council' . . . Remember this Vote!

The weakness of the west in providing it's own supplies of Oil and Gas pales by comparison to the West's reliance on China. Today China alone, processes 60% of Global Base Metals (it was 6%) . . . and all the pollution that goes with it - 25 Chinese Cities now account for 50% of Global CO2 - Out of site - Out of mind . . . The New World Order . . . 30 years since China evolved . . . Western Elitist self-flagellation in the name of Environmentalism - Maintains Total Global Pollution - While stripping the very life out of the Western Economies . . . With no end-gain . . . in Global terms . . . Environmentally. Total GLOBAL Pollution remains the same ! But we look sooo good . . . on paper . . . and . . . now, we can point fingers at others . . . Such Hypocrisy.

If China were to start a war somewhere . . . like Taiwan . . . The West can do NOTHING in any 'reasonable' timeline to meet our current demand for production currently supplied by China !

May God Bless the poor embattled warriors for Freedom and Democracy in The Ukraine . . .

It is long past due that the West step in and fight tooth and nail in ANY way we can . . . Diplomacy is obviously Dead . . .

My Thoughts . . .

Perhaps Trump was right in suggesting the US stop paying for the UN.

It's level of corruption mirrors those other international organizations largely funded by the West but controlled by smaller countries which sell their votes to the highest bidder.

The IOC, WHO and FIFA immediately come to mind.
