All true, Diane. But there is one other factor at work. China's response to Trump appears to be measured and sensible, while Trump's governance appears simply...........
Makes one wonder which of the two presidents is the apprentice.
Some of these trade imbalances as well as the rickety financial constructs lurking in the background--especially the expanding debt stemming in large part from the massive tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations passed by the previous Trump administration and pending renewal by this one, have been obvious to many financial experts for at least the past several years, but, like those credit card holders who run up huge balances, ignoring the true cost of the fees involved, prioritizing immediate gratification over long-term solvency and thereby risking big problems down the road, we've looked the other way. So what are we to do? Take it on the chin, I guess, but we'd better be making our anger at this rolling betrayal plain as day and DEMANDING REFORM.
I'm not sure that Trump's love of the word "tariffs" is the most beautiful word in the dictionary. Tariffs will come back to bite him, let's hope sooner rather than later and before he destroys America. He has certainly started the decline, you might call it "The Great Awakening"?
Who could possibly take Trump for his word? Every time he opens his mouth, nothing comes but lies, backflips and brain farts. Every time Trump or his sycophants speak, trust in the US goes down even more.
Many nations in the world are more aligned with the way in which Xi Jinping does business and will have little hesitation in moving to China’s orbit if it proves to be more stable. Only countries with a more democratic bent will have any reservations about being more reliant on China than the US.
China has shown that it is quite prepared to play hardball on trade when it suits and its move to invoke the WTO in regard to US tariffs smacks of hypocrisy, much like its attitude to international law in regards to its expansion into the South China Sea.
Be as it may, Trump has shot himself and the US in the foot with his tariffs and his constant meddling/muddling in issues he knows nothing about.
Nobody will win, but I suspect China may come out on top.
Western/democratic nations will have to learn to stand on their own two feet. The US has abrogated any responsibility it had.
A Summer of discontent is looming large in the US.
Farmers are losing their businesses and possibly their farms due to China high tariffs.
Air travels and tourism already lost substantially due to worldwide boycott of USA.
Most of small businesses are shutting down due to high import tariffs into the US. The ones who import things from China and sell on Amazon. Transport and delivery companies like USPS, HDL, Federal Express will see substantial reductions in their businesses.
Small manufacturers would see input costs rise substantially and demand for their products would fall the same.
The recent stock markets decline would have big impact on wealth effects, the consumer would slowdown in their spendings. Their sentiments would get worse overtime.
All indications point to high unemployment by Summer, as high as 15%. A depression.
Demonstrations will be everywhere in the US this Summer. Some of them will turn into riots.
Trump will blink first. He would suggest a meeting with Xi in some neutral country like Switzerland. Seizing the opportunity, Xi would demand Taiwan is not the US business and the US would have to open up for China EVs.
The tariff war could turn into a kinetic war if Trump would not accept bowing to Xi. All hells break loose. Soup lines are everywhere in the US.
We now know that the President has no legal right to impose tariffs . Lawrence O'DONNELL has explained this in detail on MSNBC. It is Congress that has the legal right to impose tariffs. Trump should be impeached now for breaking the constitution for the second time (Jan 2006 first time). But GOP can't and won't do this. Instead supports a man who breaks the constitution. Can you please write about this Diane? Thanks.

Hopefully the members of Congress will find some backbone in the summer months when they face their voters.

Sorry January 1920 not 2006.
